沙漠教會我的五月五日節

那是二○一四年的五月五日，我剛搬到紐約。在墨西哥長大，又在歐洲生活多年後，我原本以為這只會是海外墨西哥移民間的小型文化活動而已。畢竟在墨西哥本土，五月五日節根本不是最重要的節日之一。

然而我所見到的卻截然不同。

從踏足美國那一刻起，五月五日節的氛圍便無所不在——機場掛滿旗幟、街上充斥廣告、餐廳推出促銷活動。在前往曼哈頓的計程車裡，我看到新聞主播戴著寬邊帽， headlines上寫著「五．五狂飲」。

這些年每逢五月五日節，這種情況總是不斷重演：酒吧擠滿高喊著要龍舌蘭酒的客人；人們大口喝酒，往往與這個日子的真正意義毫無關聯。對許多美國人而言，五月五日節常被誤認為墨西哥獨立紀念日，或淪為廉價酒精消費的藉口。

這樣的盛況至少令人困惑，最糟的情況下則是對墨西哥文化的侮辱性刻板印象。

事實上，這個節日 commemorates的是墨西哥在一八六二年普埃布拉戰役中意外戰勝法國軍隊的勝利。這是一個關於韌性的故事，而非狂歡。但不知何處開始，其內涵被簡化成為春季假期期間酗酒 stereotypical 的行為模式。

然而，墨西哥與酒精的關係遠比這更悠久、更深邃且複雜得多。我們的文化豐富而非廉價——我在奇瓦瓦沙漠學到了這一課。

我的母親賽西莉亞．羅莫（Cecilia Romo）是一位專門研究乾旱地區的經濟學家。童年時期，我常隨她前往墨西哥北部偏遠地區，那裡是她研究如何讓幾乎寸草不生的 landscapes 創造經濟價值的地方。

沙漠環境嚴苛無情——夜晚寒冷刺骨，白天酷熱難耐；水源匱乏，生存並非 guaranteed。

儘管 sotol 常被類比為龍舌蘭酒或梅斯卡爾酒，但達斯利里翁既非 agave 植物也非仙人掌。它是生長於 harsh desert environment 中的野生 plants，需十五到二十年才能成熟。它能在 drought、強風及極端高溫等條件下存活，這種 resilience 足以 killing most crops。它生長在幾乎 nothing else 能存活的地方。

sotol spirit 的歷史超過八百年，但其原產地認證直到二○○二年才 granted——比龍舌蘭酒和梅斯卡爾酒建立 global markets 晚了 decades。

在我觀察母親的研究過程中，我對這植物的 resilience 產生了濃厚興趣。在最惡劣的環境下，它能儲存 survival 所需的一切。當它被 harvesting 並 distilled 後， resulting spirit 呈現 clean and dry 的特質—— literally just plant and water。

就像 difficult soils 中 grown 的優質葡萄釀造出 great wines 一樣 harsh conditions produce better liquid。

它的 flavor familiar yet distinct——leaner, cleaner, softer, more restrained than many expect from Mexican spirits。

二十世紀大部分時間，sotol 的發展 trajectory 被打斷 anti-distillation laws 將其推入 illegality 狀態。直到二○○四年 regain formal recognition 時，龍舌蘭酒和梅斯卡爾酒 already secured their place on the global stage。

其 timing 十分 striking。在美國 alcohol consumption overall declining trend 中 emerge another pattern：人們 drinking less but choosing better—— seeking authentic, artisanal products rooted in place。

Sotol sits squarely in that shift。

令我 most fascinated 的 not just the drink itself but what it represents。

northern Mexico rarely appears in American imagination as a place of refinement or craftsmanship。 more often framed through migration or border politics lens。 yet the region holds deep tradition of determination, lucha, resilience——qualities embodied by the sotol plant itself。

In that sense, the spirit offers a small but meaningful reframing。

It reminds us that Mexico is not a caricature of sombreros and shots。 it is a country of layers, dimensions, discovery。

因此今年五月五日節 perhaps the most interesting shift would be subtle one： instead of drinking more we might drink differently； instead of celebrating stereotype we might become curious about real history culture behind what is in our glass。

perhaps we might take a lesson from the desert——one particularly useful in current times： resilience, patience quiet power of growing where others believe nothing can。
